The Macao terminal of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao(HKZM) Bridge is now ready for the opening of the sea-crossing structure as a lighting ceremony was held on Monday night in Zhuhai City of south China's Guangdong Province.
Macao Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On as well other officials attended the ceremony ahead of celebrations to mark the 18th anniversary of the special administrative region's return to China.
The HKZM Bridge, the world's longest sea bridge, links up Zhuhai City of south China's Guangdong Province with Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, spanning 55 kilometers. Construction of the bridge started on December 15, 2009.
The project consists of a sea-crossing bridge of 22.9 kilometers, an undersea tunnel of 6.7 kilometers, which is the world's longest and deepest submarine tunnel, and two artificial islands to help connect the bridge and tunnel.
The entire HKZM Bridge is scheduled to be opened by the end of 2017, and will cut down driving time from Zhuhai to Hong Kong, and Macao from three hours to just about 30 minutes.
While bringing convenience to travel in the region, the bridge is expected to change the economic structure of the Pearl River Delta region in south China as well.
