A two-year-old girl who was trapped on the window canopy of the third floor of a residential building was saved by kind-hearted people.
The incident happened Tuesday in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang Province in east China.
At about 10 Tuesday morning, the girl was left alone at home on the fourth floor. Somehow she fell out of the balcony onto the window canopy of the apartment underneath. Old and out of repair, the canopy started to crack, which meant that the girl might fall at any minute.
A few strangers saw the scene and went out for help immediately.
Long Chunqun, who runs a store downstairs selling windows and doors, was the first among the rescuers. Long rushed up to the girl's home, the apartment numbered 401 in the building.
"The door was locked, but the next door 402 opened up, so I climbed to 401 (from the balcony of 402). When I jumped into 401, I tried for a few times to catch the girl, but I couldn't. Several people were behind me, so I said 'come and hold my feet!'" Long recalled.
The man who came to help was surnamed He, he runs a pet shop in the neighborhood. Though suffering from acrophobia, He climbed onto the balcony without hesitation.
"I would get cold feet standing on the third floor. But I went over without thinking too much. I just wanted the child to be saved. One more second could mean life danger," said He.
Neither Long nor He knew each other before, nor were they acquainted with the girl's family, but they formed a human chain with trust in each other at the critical moment.
He offered to hold Long's feet when he reached out for the girl. He believed that Long had also the same thought at that moment.
"(Once he caught hold of me), I climbed out of the window immediately (to catch the girl)," Long said.
The scene scared Long's wife, but she was not surprised when she called to mind that part of her husband's personality is to offer help.
"When I saw him climbing over there, even my feet got cold. How dangerous it was! But I know he would help, in fact he would be the first to help others when things happen, that's what he is," she said.
Neighbors were also impressed by Long's behavior of a good Samaritan.
"Courageous and resolute, I would say. He's brave, and also very straightforward," said Lu Zhiming, a local resident.
