"Each operating system has four sets of components. If any system fails, other systems will still function normally. These are what we call key sensitive components. We have to remove the glass cover first when we need to operate them. Moreover, two workers are required to pull a switch simultaneously in order to trigger an important security system. Ensuring nuclear safety is the priority of a nuclear power station. By setting up multiple systems, we are fully confident in ensuring safety of the nuclear power plant."

The world's first AP1000 nuclear power reactor, located at Sanmen Nuclear Power Station in east China's Zhejiang Province, is designed with advanced safety designs, a nuclear engineer of the project said on Wednesday.
The safety designs will make the third generation reactor much safer than its predecessors now in operation.
On top of the nuclear power plant is a 3,000-ton water tank, in which the water would flow out affected by the force of gravity in an emergency situation, so as to cool down an overheated reactor.
Another 2,500-ton water bank installed in the plant will also be used to release heat from the reactor in an accident, which will help extend the time available for rescue to 72 hours.
The new safety designs also decrease the number of valves, pumps, pipes and cables used in the plant construction, which helps reduce risks of damage and failures and improve the reliability of the plant.
Each of three separate operating systems in the main control center, with four sets of components each, can function as an emergency shutdown of a nuclear reactor.
"Each operating system has four sets of components. If any system fails, other systems will still function normally. These are what we call key sensitive components. We have to remove the glass cover first when we need to operate them. Moreover, two workers are required to pull a switch simultaneously in order to trigger an important security system," said Jin Yi, an engineer of Sanmen nuclear power No.1 unit.
He stressed that ensuring nuclear safety is the priority of a nuclear power station. "By setting up multiple systems, we are fully confident in ensuring safety of the nuclear power plant," he said.
The first phase construction of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station started on April 19, 2009. Under construction now are its first and second units.
