Storyline

A team of 15 Chinese astronauts successfully concluded a field survival training in northern China's Badain Jaran Desert on Saturday.

They have returned to Beijing after the 19-day program, which was the country’s first ever training for astronauts in desert areas of the landing ground.

Organized by China Astronaut Research and Training Center and supervised by Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the training was aimed at improving response ability regarding emergency landing of manned spacecraft in desert areas.

In six groups, the astronauts completed various subjects such as long-and-short distance rescue communications, field survival bunkers construction and desert trekking.

The trainees endured blowing sand, scorching sun, high temperature and other harsh conditions in the desert. Through the training, they further adapted themselves to desert life, mastered the use of survival gears, improved their survival ability and built strong team spirit.

According to Huang Weifen, the deputy chief designer of China Astronaut Research and Training Center, the training tested the configuration and durability of the survival gears and provided valuable references for their future improvement.

The astronauts also carried out emergency evacuation at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center during the training.
