Surveillance footage caught by cameras installed on the coach shows that the impact almost left the vehicle out of control, but the driver, despite the pain, held the steering wheel steadily and managed to stop the coach in the emergency lane.
Having saved all the 16 passengers from danger, the driver, named Wang Fei, could barely sit straight. He leaned on the steering wheel due to pain, with his face bleeding. Some passengers went to check the driver and called the police and the ambulance.
Wang was later sent to a hospital for treatment.
At the hospital he said what was on his mind when the accident happened was to try to stop the vehicle on the emergency lane for the safety of the passengers.
Police officers at the site found the iron pieces and identified them as parts of a broken brake drum that must have fallen off another vehicle.
