The content about China in the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act is permeated with Cold War mentality and violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, said Wu Qian, spokesman with the Chinese Ministry of National Defense on Tuesday.
Wu made the statement after U.S. President Donald Trump signed the bill for the fiscal year 2019 into law on Monday.
Wu said the act hypes up China-U.S. antagonism, interferes with China's internal affairs, spoils the atmosphere for the development of the two countries and two armies, and is detrimental to the mutual trust and cooperation between China and the United States. The Chinese army is resolutely against it and has lodged stern representations with the U.S. side.
Taiwan is a part of China, said Wu, adding that the Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and it is the most important and sensitive core issue in the China-U.S. relations.
Wu said China is resolutely opposed to any country engaged in official and military ties of any form with Taiwan. This position is firm and unequivocal. China will never allow any person to split Taiwan from China at any time and in any form, he added.
"We urge the United States to abide by its commitment to China on the Taiwan issue, adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, deal with issues related to Taiwan prudently, so as not to mar the relations between the two countries and the two armies, as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits," said the spokesman.
