The upcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit will further boost China and African countries' already sound political and economic relations, according to experts.
Since it was founded in 2000, FOCAC has yielded fruitful results, and the upcoming FOCAC Beijing Summit, which will be held on September 3 and 4 in China's capital, will provide a platform to further expand China-Africa relations.
"In the past five years, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the African continent four times. This has never happened in China's diplomatic history and head of state diplomacy. Under the guidance of high-level exchanges, China-Africa political relations have been developing at a very high level. That's also true for the two sides' mutual political trust," said Zeng Aiping, deputy director of the Research Institution of Developing Countries Studies under the China Institute of International Studies.
Apart from high-level exchanges, people-to-people exchanges between China and African countries are also frequent occurrences, with nearly two million people traveling between China and the African continent annually. Moreover, China has set up more than 80 Confucius Institutes and classrooms in 41 African countries.
Under the framework of FOCAC, cooperation between China and African countries has not only expanded but also deepened.
"China has been Africa's largest trading partner for nine consecutive years. The two sides' trading volume reached 170 billion U.S. dollars in 2017, a relatively big number under the current international environment and given the decline of bulk commodities' prices. According to statistics, China has sent the highest number of peacekeeping troops among the UN's five permanent member states," said Shen Xiaolei, a research assistant at the Research Institution of West Asia and Africa, under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
China and African countries have also carried out pragmatic cooperation in various fields. Chinese companies have contracted projects that not only facilitate regional connectivity in Africa but also create numerous jobs for local residents.
Additionally, China has set up a capacity cooperation fund to aid Africa's development. The fund, with initial capital of 10 billion U.S. dollars, will mainly invest in sectors like manufacturing, hi-tech, agriculture, energy, infrastructure construction and finance in African countries.
"China has been very, very important in our new development framework. Our new development framework, we are considering road construction, infrastructure. We are considering electricity, we are considering health, we are considering science and technology," said Augustus Flomo, Liberia's Deputy Minister for Economic Management at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
