A rare red sandstorm on Sunday hit the Super Camp in northern Malian city of Gao, where the Sector East Headquarters of the UN mission in Mali and the Chinese peacekeeping force are stationed.
The sandstorm swept across the camp at around 13:30, turning the sky yellow. Sands and stones were caught up in the gale, with rain lashing in the meantime.
Soon, the dust turned to a rusty red color, which is rare to see. The visibility in the camp was then reduced to less than five meters.
The wind speed also reached 28.5 to 32.6 meters per second.
Despite the severe weather, the seventh Chinese peacekeeping force to Mali stayed on duty and kept a close eye on the condition outside the camp.
The red sandstorm gradually weakened from 14:10, when the soldiers on guard reported the situation to the combat duty room.
It was the first sandstorm and the first red sandstorm the seventh group of Chinese peacekeepers to Mali had encountered since they arrived at the mission area on May 23.
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), established on April 25, 2013 to stabilize the country after the Tuareg rebellion of 2012, has become the UN's most dangerous peacekeeping mission, with 177 peacekeepers killed out of a force of about 15,000.
