China on Saturday unveiled its plans for the research and development as well as launch of new "Dragon" series commercial carrier rockets over the next two years.
The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALVT), affiliated to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, announced the plans at a press conference in Beijing.
The new commercial vehicle series will include two types -- the solid-propellant carrier rockets "Jielong", or swift dragon in Chinese, as well as the liquid-propellant carrier rockets "Tenglong", meaning flying dragon.
In addition, "Jielong" will be consisting of solid-propellant carrier rockets of SD-1 (Swift Dragon), SD-2 and SD-3, as well as SD-S sub-orbital vehicles.
Among them, the SD-1 already made its maiden flight on August 17 earlier this year.
Meanwhile, the liquid-propellant carrier rockets "Tenglong" will have a larger carrying capacity, and is expected to carry out the test flight by 2021.
Based on the existing Long March rockets, the new Dragon rocket series are developed to meet the growing domestic and international commercial launch purposes.
