The principle of encouraging students to go to the nearest school to receive education applies to the students of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang. Storyline

Authorities in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Friday rebutted biased Western media reports on government-sponsored boarding school education for students from poverty-stricken families in the region.

The New York Times and some other Western news media recently reported that the Xinjiang government "sends children to boarding schools, separating them from their parents".

Parhat Rozi, deputy secretary of the Kashgar Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and head of Kashgar prefectural government, rejected the report at a press conference in Urumqi, the capital city of the autonomous region.

He said that relevant reports are baseless and packed with fakery, and that the reports are completely based on subjective fabrications.

He explained the local government policies on promoting education, stressing that students' and their parents' free will are fully respected in the application of the boarding school education system.

"The application of the system of boarding school education proves to be an effective approach for promoting the level of education in remote regions, and reducing the burden on students and their parents. The principle of encouraging students to go to the nearest school to receive education applies to the students of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang. For students whose home is not far away from the school, they are free to choose not to live in school. For those whose home is far away from the school, the school can offer dorms for free," said Parhat Rozi.

It is all up to the students and their parents to decide whether to attend a boarding school, he emphasized.

Refuting rumors on Xinjiang's operation of vocational education and training centers, officials said that the practical training administered at the centers is aimed at improving the trainees' vocational skills. They also denied any forced labor, saying the trainees could choose their own jobs after graduation.
