"Bringing together so many people from different countries, different universities, it's a kind of education that was otherwise very difficult to have. For example, there were students from India and South Africa there. And to them, climate change issues are sometimes very different. Their countries have different priorities and different challenges. So understanding that I think, is something that I could not learn in a classroom, but that is very important going forward to understand what different countries are seeing. "

During the latest UN climate summit in Madrid, 15 students from world-renowned universities vowed to enhance cooperation in climate change research.

The alliance, initiated by Tsinghua University, made up of students from 12 leading universities around the world.

"Bringing together so many people from different countries, different universities, it's a kind of education that was otherwise very difficult to have. For example, there were students from India and South Africa there. And to them, climate change issues are sometimes very different. Their countries have different priorities and different challenges. So understanding that I think, is something that I could not learn in a classroom, but that is very important going forward to understand what different countries are seeing," said Joel Naoki Ernesto Christoph, a member of the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate.

Wang Xiaoyu, also a member of this alliance, drafted a letter to President Xi about their activities, but did not expect to receive a response.

"This reply recognizes our enthusiasm and determination to tackle climate change issues. We are so encouraged and we are willing to make more efforts on the building of a community with a shared future with our passion and practical actions,"said Wang, who is also a Phd student from Tsinghua University.

The race is on to keep the increase in global average temperature to below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The United Nations says that can't happen unless countries and corporations do much more from now on. But the alliance said they are ready to contribute.

"It is now time for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. It requires the active participation of all sectors of society. The role of the Alliance is to closely link member schools and by working together, we can achieve what we can't achieve on our own," said Li Zheng, secretary general of the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate.

"Universities of the alliance need to discuss the urgency of actions. We are looking at the greatest dangers of climate change, and the urgency of the actions needs to be constantly researched and shared to the society, because not everyone understands the urgency of this problem," said Zhang Jian, deputy secretary general of the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate

As President Xi's reply stated, climate change is a common challenge facing the entire humanity, and China hopes other nations can follow its lead.
