Chinese manufacturers mostly in the textile industry are joining the global fight against COVID-19 by transitioning to mask production as the demand for face masks is soaring globally due to the pandemic.

Fashion lines and car makers have suspended parts of their business and have temporarily transformed themselves into makeshift mask manufacturers.

In east China's Zhejiang Province, more than 100 enterprises volunteered to help produce non-surgical masks. EP Yaying Fashion Group, a fashion company, was among the few selected.

"We've been trying to use the experience from our clothing production line and managed to find new ways to adapt. Now we have more than 150 sewing workers producing masks," said Qiu Ying, Party secretary of the company.

But the transformation has not been easy, especially under a ticking clock.

"The hardest part is to integrate the resources, such as the material and manpower, to make sure the masks we produce meet the national standards," said Li Jianhua, CEO of Wensli Group, a textiles company.

Three days was all SGMW had to transform itself from a car maker to a mask manufacturer. The company based in south China mobilized 11 production lines to produce disposable surgical masks and has been producing 2 million pieces per day.

"We were on such a tight schedule and the equipment and the materials are limited. In just three days, we got the license to produce masks," said Zhou Xing, the marketing director.

SGMW said their own "Wuling Masks" are not for sale, but are being given away. Part of the finished products will be donated to the local government for distribution and another part will be sent to frontline medical workers.
