"We predicted that a 50,000-cubic-meter flood per second will flow into the Three Gorges reservoir around July 19. When the first flood occurred, the Three Gorges reservoir compensated the Chenglingji section of the Yangtze River so it has a relatively high water level. If the discharge stays at 28,000 cubic meters per second, the water level of the reservoir will keep rising and reach 170 meters on July 25. The normal water level of the Three Gorges reservoir is 175 meters."

Storyline

The Changjiang Water Resources Commission is increasing water discharge from the Three Gorges reservoir in order to control the water level in the Yangtze River, an official said on Thursday.

According to the commission under the Ministry of Water Resources, the water level in the reservoir is still high due a storage of floodwater though the water level in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River is lowering slowly after the first flood receded.

To prepare for the rainfall in the coming days, control the rising water level in the reservoir and stagger flood regulation in the middle and lower reaches, the commission adjusted the daily discharge of the reservoir to 28,000 cubic meters per second on Wednesday and to 30,000 cubic meters per second on Thursday.

The normal water level of the Three Gorges reservoir is 175 meters," said Chen Guiya, deputy chief engineer of the commission.
