The top 10 candidate names have been selected for China's first Mars rover after an initial review over names solicited from around the globe, said the Chinese space authorities on Monday.
A 40-day public voting will then be held online as from this Wednesday for the 10 shortlisted names, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
"We followed several principles in the appraisal. The names must comply with relevant national regulations and match the characteristics of China's first Mars probe mission. The name solicitation started in July 2020 and ended about a month later.

China launched the Mars probe on July 23, 2020, designed to complete orbiting, landing and roving in a single mission, thus taking the first step in its planetary exploration of the solar system. It is expected to reach the Mars around February 2021. After entering orbit, it will spend another two to three months surveying the candidate landing sites before it touches down.
