China released a video of its Tianwen-1 probe entering orbit around Mars on Friday.
The Tianwen-1 probe successfully entered the orbit around Mars on Wednesday after a nearly seven-month voyage from the Earth.
The video, released by China National Space Administration (CNSA), showed the complete process of the probe entering an elliptical orbit around the red planet, with its closest distance from the Martian surface at about 400 km. Through the video, surface of the Mars, solar panel wings, tracking antenna and even the slight vibration of probe after engine ignition can be seen clearly.
According to the CNSA, the video was taken by cameras of the Engineering Survey Sub-System on the solar panel wing and tracking antenna. The cameras took photos once every three seconds, and it continuously photographed for about half an hour. So the video was compounded by numerous photos with the speed of about 10 pictures per second.
The Engineering Survey Sub-System is a monitoring system composed of several small monitoring cameras with a small size and low energy consumption, which undertakes the monitoring tasks such as the deployment of solar panel wings of probe and key action processes. And it will continue to record the journey of the probe in the following days.
The Tianwen-1 is an interplanetary mission to Mars by the CNSA to send a robotic spacecraft, which consists of an orbiter, deployable camera, lander and a rover. The Tianwen-1 was launched via a Long March-5 rocket, China's largest launch vehicle, from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the coast of south China's island province of Hainan on July 23, 2020.
Literally, Tianwen means Questions to Heaven and comes from a poem written by Qu Yuan (about 340-278 BC), one of the greatest poets of ancient China. The name signifies the Chinese nation's perseverance in pursuing truth and science and exploring nature and the universe, according to the CNSA.
