The China National Space Administration released on Saturday four new images of the country's Mars probe Tianwen-1 landing on and exploring the red planet, showing the working state of the orbiter and the Mars rover Zhurong from various angles.
The four new images include a group photo of the orbiter and Mars, a close-up of the orbiter, an image of Martian Arctic icecap, and an image of the landscape of the Martian surface taken by the Zhurong rover.
"The orbiter is currently orbiting Mars in very good condition. We can see our orbiter flying around Mars in a working state, and we can clearly see the solar panel wings, directional antenna and some of the antenna facilities in orbit," said Sun Zezhou, chief system designer of the Tianwen-1 Mars probe.
In the image of the Martian Arctic icecap, the white areas are the "ice sheets" covering the Martian Arctic, consisting of dry ice and water ice, while the red and dark areas are the bare surface. After years of deposition and ablation, it presents a circular spiral landforms composed of white ice and bare surface with the pole as the center.
"Because the South and North Polar regions of Mars are cold, they have white polar caps, and their surface is mostly composed of dry ice or solid carbon dioxide," said Sun.
The last picture is stitched by the Zhurong rover using three images obtained by the navigation terrain camera. In the image, typical Martian landforms such as craters and rocks can be seen.
"The Zhurong rover has been working on the surface of Mars for more than seven months now. We gave it a three-month mission at the time, but now it is far beyond that. The Zhurong rover, now on the surface of Mars, is also doing very well," said Sun.
As of Dec. 31, 2021, the orbiter has been in orbit for 526 days and the rover has worked on the surface of Mars for 225 Martian days. The two are in good condition and running normally.
A Martian day is approximately 40 minutes longer than a day on Earth.
