Storyline

China's telecommunications industry experienced steady expansion in the first seven months of this year, with emerging businesses registering strong growth, official data showed.

According to the data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the total volume of telecommunications services increased by 11.2 percent year on year from January to July this year, with the business revenue reaching 1.0354 trillion yuan (about 145.4 billion U.S. dollars), a year-on-year growth of 3 percent. It maintained the same growth rate as in the first half of the year.

Among these, emerging services such as cloud computing and big data generated revenue of 258.4 billion yuan (about 36.3 billion U.S. dollars), representing a year-on-year increase of 11 percent and accounting for one-fourth of the total revenue.

China's digital transformation in enterprises is expanding in both breadth and depth, particularly driven by new applications such as artificial intelligence and large models, leading to a surge in demand for data flow utilization and computing services, which in turn has spurred rapid growth in emerging business markets.

The construction of new infrastructures, including 5G and gigabit networks, is progressing steadily. By the end of July, a total of 3.996 million 5G base stations had been built and activated, representing a net increase of 619,000 since the end of last year.
