Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said on Sunday that he would name a new interim chancellor in the coming week to succeed Karl Nehammer, who announced on Saturday that he would step down as chancellor of the country's caretaker government.
Nehammer would also resign from the position of chairman of the People's Party after the collapse of coalition talks among the People's Party, Social Democratic Party and NEOS party and the withdrawal of the NEOS party from the discussion.
President Van der Bellen said he has had a phone call with the far-right Freedom Party's leader Herbert Kickl and invited him to discuss the formation of a new government on Monday.
Kickl's Freedom Party came first in the polls in September's national election with about 29 percent of the vote, followed by the People's Party and the Social Democratic Party with 26.3 percent and 21.1 percent respectively, but President Van der Bellen skipped Kickl and authorized the People's Party chairman Nehammer to forge a new government.
Van der Bellen said he tasked Nehammer of doing so because other parties including the People's Party refused to co-lead the government with the Freedom Party.
Now the situation has changed. President Van der Bellen said on Sunday he was informed by Nehammer that "the voices within the People's Party that rule out cooperation with Kickl have become quieter," which opens up the path for a coalition between the People's Party and the Freedom Party.
The People's Party on Sunday appointed its secretary-general Christian Stocker to succeed Nehammer as its interim party leader.
Stocker, a sharp critic of Kickl for months, told a press conference later that day that his party would be willing to accept an offer of coalition negotiations from the Freedom Party, if Kickl had been authorized to form a government and invited the People's Party to hold talks on forming a new government.
