A lightning bolt ignited a massive fireball in the sky after it struck high-voltage power lines in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province on Monday.
Cellphone footage showed a loud bang rocking the city before a huge ball of fire erupted seconds later, leaving residents in shock and awe.
The blast occurred shortly before 18:00 in Shenyang's Tiexi District.
A flash of lightning hit the transmission lines near a residential compound, sparking a fire on the grass underneath and some nearby buildings. The flames were later doused by heavy rain.
The incident did not cause any damage to the power lines or interrupt the local power supply. No casualties were reported.
Later during the day, the city was hit by a downpour which triggered severe flooding in the streets.
Also on Monday, pouring rain and strong wind swept Tongliao City in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region at around 15:00.
A hailstorm, which lasted about 15 minutes, pelted Horqin Left Middle Banner.
Large hail stones damaged many vehicles, leaving holes, dents or cracks on their windows.
There were also reports of crop damage at several villages where farmlands and greenhouses were also ravaged by the bout of short-lived yet heavy hail.
"The biggest hail stone had a diameter of up to six centimeters and weighed 48 grams. We received a surveillance radar warning at 14:15 and issued an orange alert for hail in advance," said Jin Shuang, a forecaster with the meteorological bureau of Horqin Left Middle Banner.
As of Tuesday morning, Horqin Left Rear Banner, the hardest-hit area by the rainstorm, recorded 110.8 millimeters of precipitation.
Inner Mongolia is expected to see more rains this week, with thunderstorm and hailstorm forecast for the central and western areas.
