Storyline

An old building in Shanghai was recently relocated through walking-style translation.

The 18-day relocation project of the old site of the Lagena Primary School on Huaihai Road, Shanghai was finally completed on Thursday afternoon.

What is unique about the project is that the building had nearly 200 supports under it. When the building was moving, the supports are like a man who is walking, moving up and down by turn so as to make possible the relocation of the building.

Generally, buildings are moved through more mature methods like slide rail relocation and flatbed relocation, neither of which are fit for the building.

Because the old building is up to 7,600 tons in weight and is irregular in shape, it is highly difficult to maintain the stability of the center of gravity during relocation.

Also, the small area of the site limited the use of slide rail relocation, by which, a building needs to slide along a rail during movement. Neither is flatbed translation suitable, for flatbed vehicles are unable to pull such a heavy and large old house.

Thus, in the end, the walking-style relocation plan was formulated after multiple rounds of discussions.

"Because of requirements of the area and the construction site, we adopted the walking-style relocation. This is the the first time Shanghai has adopted the largest walking-style building relocator in China. We can enable the building to reach the position while rotating in one go," said Hua Li, vice president of Shanghai Construction No.1 Group.

It is learned that the Lagena Primary School was built in 1935 and its building has five floors.

In September 2019, the construction of the Pacific Xintiandi Commercial Center project started. The project requires the school to be moved from the original site northwestward to a new site.

"We will carry out comprehensive renovation work on the Lagena Primary School after the relocation. We plan to transform the school into a building integrating cultural education, intangible heritage preservation, and involving both culture and innovation. We hope to inject new vitality into the building," Li Jianfeng, general manager of Pacific Xintiandi Business Center.

The Pacific Xintiandi Business Center is expected to open to public in 2023.
