"Multilateralism and global cooperation is the only way to go ahead and to survive, so it was the first point which I appreciated very much. The second one was that he was talking about digitalization and sustainability, because these two mega trends, the green sustainability and the growth orientation based on digitalization are really future issues. The third point of what I appreciated was that he was talking about basic human values like freedom, justice, equality and collaboration, cooperation. These three were striking for me and I appreciated very much that he was putting it on the table."

Storyline

Hungary appreciates China's financial help during the COVID-19-led economic recession and is willing to join with China in building the Belt and Road through wide consultation and joint contribution for shared benefits, said the vice president of the Hungarian central bank.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for joint efforts in tackling the global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change when delivering a keynote speech via video at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2021.

In his speech, Xi elaborated the concepts of multilateralism, digital economy and green development profoundly, which was applauded by Patai Mihaly, deputy governor of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank in Hungary.

These three were striking for me and I appreciated very much that he was putting it on the table," he said.

The economist also applauded China's Belt and Road Initiative, noting that the two countries have carried out extensive cooperation under the initiative, such as the construction of the Budapest-Belgrade railway, Fudan University's setting up a branch school in Budapest, as well as the medical cooperation amid COVID-19.

"If one of the major players of the world economy is coming to you, you should welcome it. So, definitely from the first point on, we are very much supportive of the Belt and Road Initiative. During the worst year, you (China) are getting forward and you are helping us. So definitely it is appreciated," he said.

Patai Mihaly also said that the two countries have enhanced mutual understanding on the basis of their win-win cooperation, and have become close cooperation partners.

"China's influence on the world economy is growing year by year. It's very important that Hungary has an excellent relationship with China. And these interests are mutual and we do believe in Eurasian cooperation as well. We do very much appreciate the friendship and the flourishing relations with China," he said.

Founded in 2001 when Asian countries sought economic integration in the aftermath of the 1998 financial crisis, the Boao Forum, a non-governmental organization, has been dedicated to facilitating exchanges among stakeholders in Asia and beyond.

Its annual conference in 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic.

Themed "A World in Change: Join Hands to Strengthen Global Governance and Advance Belt and Road Cooperation," this year's Boao Forum attracted more than 2,600 attendees from more than 60 countries and regions offline. The forum is aimed at providing an inclusive platform to discuss challenges of common concern, build consensus and boost confidence for the region and beyond.
