Storyline

The superb skills and sharp mind of a worker, who welded China's space station core module, guaranteed its successful launch.

Zheng Xing, a senior technician of the 529 Factory of China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, has welded many spacecrafts for China's space mission, including the core module of the new space station which was launched from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in south China's Hainan Province on Wednesday.

The welding of the core module is not an easy work as the total length of the seams to be welded is over 300 meters and is required to be finished at one go.

"We can't start welding (the space station core module) if the test product cannot meet up to the required standards. We encountered such problem on a number of occasions," said Zheng.

Zheng found that when the air humidity exceeded 40 percent, the number and size of the pores in the welding seam increase significantly.

After repeated perusing, he found a new way of welding, that is, to use two rows of lamps to heat the work surface to reduce the number of pores. That means, he has to work for more than one hour non-stop under the temperature of 50 degrees to 60 degrees Celsius.

"Sometimes, the welding helmet was wet all over with sweat, blurring the vision. I have to wipe it from time to time. It is worthwhile for the sake of guaranteeing quality," said Zheng.

Zheng is both a hard worker and a good thinker. That is the deepest impression Zheng Xing has left to people. At the age of 18, he won the third place at a Beijing vocational school skill competition and, with this certificate, he was admitted into the 529 factory.

"The first day when I came to the factory, the then director Lu, who was in charge of my workshop, took me to see the slogan behind us. Every welding point concerns the life of the astronauts. Every process concerns success or failure of manned spacecraft. It was at that time that I realized the heavy responsibilities on our shoulders," said Zheng.

The Shenzhou spacecrafts, Tiangong program and Tianzhou cargo spacecrafts, whose welding was done by Zheng Xing, have been successfully launched.

"I feel very proud to see the products for state major projects coming out of the hands of our workers," said Zheng.
