A herd of wild Asian elephants lied down for rest at a local wood in Kunming City, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, on Monday on their way of marching north.
The elephant herd was found to start taking rest at around 07:00 on Monday, as they slowly lied down on the ground, according to Chen Shengyao, a staff member monitoring the elephant herd at the Yunnan forest firefighting brigade.
Chen said it was the first time they saw all the elephants within the herd to lie down for sleep together in the 12 days since they started monitoring the herd. Before this collective rest, there were always three to four elephants sleeping while another three to four elephants stood guarding nearby.
In order not to wake them up or disturb them, Chen said the monitoring team will adjust the drone to the maximum height at 350 meters from the herd every time they take a rest.
According to experts, elephants usually cannot lie down for long due to their heavy weight; lest their inner organs will be in problems with the pressure.
One male elephant of the 15 wild elephants left the herd on Sunday, and was located in a forest on Monday, about 4 kilometers in straight-line distance northeast to the herd, according to an on-site command tracking the elephants.
In March last year, 16 elephants in the herd left their nature reserve in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. In November 2020, the herd arrived in Mojiang County, Pu'er City, where one of the female elephants gave birth to a calf. On April 16 this year, the 17 elephants entered Yuanjiang County in Yuxi city. A week later, two of the elephants broke from the herd and returned to Mojiang County. The rest continued their journey northward.
These elephants traveled approximately 500 km from their forest home before reaching Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan, on Wednesday night.
After the elephant herd ran out of the reserve, local authorities started a 24-hour monitoring scheme, mobilizing about 410 people and 120 vehicles, flew 14 drones to track and escort the herd and secure the safety of these elephants. Local authorities also have fed these elephants with 2 tons of food, while evacuating local residents and vehicles to make way for the herd along the way.
Asian elephants are under the top-class state protection in China, where they are mostly found in Yunnan. Thanks to enhanced protection, the wild elephant population in the province has grown to about 300, up from 193 in the 1980s.
