"For example, Shenzhou-12 is docked on the space station. Because of space debris or various reasons, the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft may be at risk when it returns. Then we could launch Shenzhou 13 in the shortest time. The astronauts would be able to return to the ground on Shenzhou-13. In that case, it can be used as the emergency rescue ship for Shenzhou-12."

"Both Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2 had only one docking port. If the docked spacecraft couldn't be evacuated, there would have been no way to dock a back-up spacecraft. Now, thanks to the progress of the space station, there are three docking ports for spacecraft. If there is a problem in the docked spacecraft, two other docking ports are still available."

"We used to fly in orbit for only a short period of time. For example, the Shenzhou-11 was docked in orbit for 30 days, which was a medium and short term mission. Shenzhou-12 will stay at the space station for three months. Its successor will serve a much longer term, with plans to dock for half a year. Therefore, the long service life is actually a major feature of Shenzhou-12 and later spacecrafts."

Chinese space engineers are preparing Shenzhou-13 as a backup spacecraft for the Shenzhou-12 space mission, in order to better guarantee astronauts' safety in the case of any emergency.
The Shenzhou-11 docked with the Tiangong-2 Space Laboratory to form a complex and stayed in space for about one month, making it the Shenzhou spacecraft with the longest stay in orbit to date. According to future plans, the Shenzhou-12 and Shenzhou-13 will stay in space for three months, and the Shenzhou-14 and subsequent spacecraft will stay for as long as half a year. In order to better guarantee the safety of astronauts, the Shenzhou spacecrafts are required to have rapid launch and emergency rescue capacities.
In that case, it can be used as the emergency rescue ship for Shenzhou-12," said Shao Limin, deputy technological manager of the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft.
In follow-up missions, every Shenzhou spacecraft will have a back-up at the launch site, noted Shao. The plan for backup spacecraft could only be realized now due to the increased number of docking ports on the space station, he added.
"Both Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2 had only one docking port. If the docked spacecraft couldn't be evacuated, there would have been no way to dock a back-up spacecraft. Now, thanks to the progress of the space station, there are three docking ports for spacecraft. If there is a problem in the docked spacecraft, two other docking ports are still available," explained Shao.
Engineers have enabled the Shenzhou spacecraft to have a longer service life, since the spacecraft will be docked at the space station for a longer period of time in the future.
