"In fact the sounds were made when the pinion of the Mars rover rotates on the rack, or say the clashing sounds between metals. The purpose we install the recording device is to capture the sounds of wind on Mars during its windy weathers. We really want to hear how the winds sound like on a planet other than the Earth."

"With the [video, image and audio] files we released this time, including those sounds recorded when our Mars rover left the lander, we are able to conduct in-depth analysis to the environment and condition of Mars, for example, the density of the atmosphere on the Mars."

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) on Sunday has released a series of audio files that were first-ever recorded by the country's Mars rover Zhurong.
The precious audios were captured on May 22 by the recording devices installed on the Zhurong Mars rover, which unveiled how it sounds like when the Mars rover had its engine started, rolled off the ramps of lander, until it landed on the red planet.
According to a chief scientist working with the country's Mars exploration mission, the sounds are a mixture when metals clanks and the engine starts.
"In fact the sounds were made when the pinion of the Mars rover rotates on the rack, or say the clashing sounds between metals. The purpose we install the recording device is to capture the sounds of wind on Mars during its windy weathers. We really want to hear how the winds sound like on a planet other than the Earth," said Jia Yang, deputy chief designer of "Tianwen-1" Mars probe system.
The sounds, as well as images and videos, captured by the Chinese Mars rover, will further help scientists' research into the red planet, while laying a solid foundation for other Mars missions.
"With the [video, image and audio] files we released this time, including those sounds recorded when our Mars rover left the lander, we are able to conduct in-depth analysis to the environment and condition of Mars, for example, the density of the atmosphere on the Mars," said Liu Jizhong, deputy commander of China's first Mars exploration program.
The six-wheeled solar-powered rover, resembling a blue butterfly and with a mass of 240 kg, has made China the second country after the United States to land and operate a rover on Mars.
The rover Zhurong is named after the god of fire in ancient Chinese mythology. The name echoes with the Chinese name for the red planet, Huoxing (the planet of fire), while the name of the mission, Tianwen, means Questions to Heaven, the title of a poem by the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan (circa 340-278 BC).
China's Tianwen-1 mission, consisting of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover, was launched on July 23, 2020. The lander carrying the rover touched down in the southern part of Utopia Planitia, a vast plain on the northern hemisphere of the Mars, on May 15.
So far the rover has worked for 42 Martian days (about 43 days on Earth) and run for 236 meters.
It will continue to record the Martian landscape with high-resolution three-dimensional images, analyze the material composition of the planet's surface, detect its sub-surface structure and magnetic field, search for traces of water ice and observe the surrounding meteorological environment.
