The different elements of the whole working system are correlated with each other, so a relatively high degree of space-ground coordination is needed. In view of the complicated relationships between these elements, we have made careful designs to ensure the success of the EVAs."

Storyline

Different departments of the ground telemetry, tracking and command (TT and C) systems have worked closely with each other to provide support for Chinese astronauts to conduct extravehicular activities (EVAs) in space.

Chinese astronauts Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo both slipped out of the space station core module Tianhe on Sunday, conducting extravehicular activities (EVAs), according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

Donning new-generation homemade EMU (extravehicular mobility unit) spacesuits Feitian, meaning flying to space, the two astronauts completed installing the foot restraints and extravehicular working platform on a mechanical arm, the CMSA said.

They also finished lifting the panoramic camera and worked together to install other relevant extravehicular equipment with the aid of the mechanical arm, the agency said.

"The EVA mission involves the cooperation between astronauts, the space station, the mechanical arm and the ground-based TT and C networks. The different elements of the whole working system is correlated with each other, so a relatively high degree of space-ground coordination is needed. In view of the complicated relationships between these elements, we have made careful designs to ensure the success of the EVAs," said Yang Yanbo, deputy commander for the space station mission with Beijing Aerospace Control Center.

Beijing Aerospace Control Center has coded its different departments according to their respective responsibilities during the EVA mission.

"The department coded Shuguang is responsible for providing support for astronauts while they are conducting EVAs. Another department coded Tianhe focuses on monitoring the space station Tianhe core module. Tianlu is the code for the TT and C networks of relay satellites. There are also many other codes for the different positions at our control center. All the positions have to work closely together in accordance with relevant procedures," said Yang.

Astronauts need to use different communication methods while conducting EVAs.

"There is a cord linking astronauts' space suits and the spacecraft. But when astronauts go outside the spacecraft, the cord will be cut off. Then the communications between space and ground will be guaranteed by relay satellites. In emergency situations, we also use the SMA signal as a backup means for communications," said Yang.

During the EVA mission, the TT and C system should closely track astronauts while they are working outside the space station.

"When astronauts conduct EVAs, we mainly use relay satellites to improve the coverage of the TT and C system to track astronauts. We will also adjust the attitude of the space station to ensure that the central antenna of the space station can point at relay satellites for a longer period of time," said Yang.
