Storyline

A howitzer detachment of the People's Liberation Army carried out a live-fire shooting drill in a unfamiliar terrain 5,200 meters above the sea level, to sharpen their combat capability.

The drill started with emergency motility with armored vehicles winding and wading through river-covered wetlands, swamps, gritstone sandland as well as other intricate and complex landforms before reaching designated destinations.

Soldiers drove across flooded road sections, moor, and gravel and occupied an artillery position. They fired at several targets that were one kilometer away after receiving an order.

After a two-round shooting, the drill commander ordered a team to permeate into the "enemy", the scout team to carry out interception, and artillerymen to reposition to a place that was miles away in 15 minutes. There, the artillerymen were asked to conduct indirect shooting, rather than direct shooting.

"This live-fire shooting drill, with many subjects and strict evaluation requirements, not only tested the integration between soldiers and equipment, but also tested our teamwork. It also systemically tested the quality and effectiveness of our early trainings," said Fang Zheng, a company commander.

During the indirect shooting, soldiers with different tasks fired at the "target" one by one.

The detachment also reviewed the drill after it was completed, hoping to find solutions to problems exposed in the drill and prepare for future trainings.

"We, guided by tasks and based on combat requirements, trained what is needed in battles and what is needed for victories. We followed stricter requirements, hoping to improve the army's combat ability and forging winning abilities,"said Yang Rujun, an instructor of the regiment.
