Chinese astronauts have completed their second extravehicular activities and returned to the space station core module, according to the China Manned Space Agency on Friday.
The agency declared the spacewalk a complete success after the three-member Shenzhou-12 crew coordinated and completed all the assigned tasks during their six hours outside the module, including lifting up a panorama camera, installing thermal control equipment and setting up other extravehicular devices.
Astronaut Nie Haisheng opened the hatch of the node cabin of the core module Tianhe at 08:38 on Friday. Donning Feitian, new-generation homemade extravehicular spacesuit that literally means "flying to space", Nie together with his colleague Liu Boming slipped out of the Tiangong space station at 10:12. Astronaut Tang Hongbo stayed inside Tianhe to cooperate with Nie and Liu for their extravehicular activities.
After getting out of the cabin, Nie first installed foot restraints and an extravehicular working platform on the mechanical arm. Then, Nie stood on the mechanical arm and transported an extended thermal control pumping set to the operation point. Liu also moved to the operation point by climbing, and the two cooperated with each other to install the set.
The extended pumping set is the core equipment of the air conditioning system of the space station. Based on the existing temperature control set, the newly installed heat pumps serve as a backup of the circulating pump in the module.
After the installation, the pair reached the panorama camera D near the hatch to set up a bracket and lift it up so as to obtain a better shooting vision.
Then, Nie and Liu collected all the tools including the foot restraints, extravehicular working platform and a handle into a tool kit outside the hatch. They returned to the module at 14:33, one hour ahead of schedule.
Liu and Tang successfully performed the country's first tandem spacewalk on July 4, working for seven hours outside the Tiangong station in orbit around the Earth while Nie remained inside the core module to support the pair's operation outside.
The three astronauts were sent into space aboard the Shenzhou-12 spaceship on June 17 and are expected to return to the Earth in mid-September.
