China's first series of self-driving sanitation trucks started trial operations in May on the public roads of Guangzhou City, capital of southern China's Guangdong Province.
The "Robosweeper" series co-developed by self-driving service provider WeRide and bus producer Yutong Group are black-and-gray and can automatically sweep, wash and disinfect.
Things typically seen on manned vehicles like a cockpit, steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedal are all gone from the robotic sweeper.
"There is a cloud control system behind all the trucks for route planning and model adjusting," said Gu Jiading, "Robosweeper" product manager.
The vehicles can also self-complete routine maintenance such as charging, water filling, and sewage discharge completely on its own.
The first batch of 50 trucks were tested in Nansha District to better prepare the city for possible public health emergencies.
"It's going well currently. It will do cleanings based on different road conditions. We will collect the information of various situations and figure out appropriate solutions to the problems," said the product manager.
