Storyline

The number of foreign mercenaries operating in Ukraine has almost been halved in number from 6,600 down to around 3,500, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Thursday.

Major General Igor Konashenkov, the defense ministry's spokesman, gave an update at a daily briefing on Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine.

"We note that the inflow of foreign mercenaries to Ukraine to take part in combat operations against the Russian armed forces has virtually dried up since the beginning of May. According to the data [at] our disposal, the total number of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine has now been almost halved from 6,600 to 3,500. At the same time, the number of mercenaries in combat units of the Ukrainian armed forces and national guard in Donbass has decreased by orders of magnitude," said Konashenkov.

The Defense Ministry announced on the same day that the Russian military had attacked concentrated areas of dozens of Ukrainian armed force personnel and military equipment by using air-based high-precision missiles, operational and tactical aviation units, land aviation units and drones.

The battlefield situation in Luhansk still remains grim for the Ukrainian army, according to the Russian defense ministry, but Russian troops have not taken full control of the Severodonetsk, the National News Agency of Ukraine reported Thursday, citing information from Serhii Haidai, the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration.

Haidai said in a social media post on Wednesday that nearly 80 percent of Severodonetsk was now occupied by Russian troops, but that street fighting was still continuing. In addition, another important city in the Luhansk region, Lysychansk, remains under Ukrainian control.

Oleksiy Gromov, deputy chief of the main operations department of Ukraine's general staff, reported on Thursday that the Russian army launched a full-line attack in the Donetsk region, focusing on Lyman, Severodonetsk and Bakhmut.

Gromov stressed that fighting on the streets of Severodonetsk is fierce and the battlefield situation is constantly changing.
