China's first domestically-built 100-tonne-class unmanned ship completed its first trial in open water on Tuesday in the eastern Zhejiang Province, marking a new breakthrough in the country's autonomous navigation and intelligent cabin technologies of unmanned vessels.
The ship, with a length of more than 40 meters and a displacement of about 200 tonnes, has a maximum speed of more than 20 knots, and can operate normally in sea-state-code Level Ⅴ (wave height reaching 2.5 to four meters) and sail safely in sea-state code Level Ⅵ (wave height reaching four to six meters).
"The entire ship is equipped with domestically-made equipment. We adopted an integrated power system in which the main engine can transfer for low-speed operation for the first time, with a high level of intelligence," said Zou Long, person in charge of the unmanned ship project.
The research and development of the unmanned ship project started from the end of 2015, with a goal of realizing cruise in high sea states, low noise, high intelligence and stealth, unmanned sailing and independence in design.
The entire construction process adopted China's domestic technologies and supporting facilities, with a number of technologies created by China. The overall technology has reached the leading level in the world.
Before arriving in Zhejiang in 2021 to prepare for the trial trip in open water, the ship once operated in waters off Jiujiang City of east China's Jiangxi Province in August 2019, demonstrating its autonomous navigation capability for the first time.
The trial trip was completed after three hours of data collection. The collision avoidance tests will be conducted in the next step to further test the ship's performance.
