"People-centered philosophy" and "high-quality development" were the primary themes of Chinese President Xi Jinping's inspection tour of southwest China's Sichuan Province, said an international corporate strategist in a China Global Television Network (CGTN) video recently.

Robert Lawrence Kuhn, chairman of the Kuhn Foundation, who also hosts CGTN's "The Watcher", in the latest episode of the program, reviewed Xi's route in Sichuan and his remarks.

President Xi inspected the city of Meishan on his first morning and visited the village of Yongfeng, the province's largest pilot base for new rice varieties and new agri-technologies. He learned about high-standard farmland development, boosting grain production, promoting rural vitalization, and maintaining effective COVID-19 prevention and control. Xi then inspected, on foot, the Village's sewage treatment tank and health station.

Kuhn said President Xi then visited Sansu Temple, the former residence of Su Xun and his two sons Su Shi and Su Zhe, three literary masters of the Northern Song Dynasty (10th to 12th centuries), where he encouraged respecting traditional Chinese culture and strengthening cultural confidence.

In Yibin, called the "first city on the Yangtze River," where the Yangtze, Jinsha and Minjiang rivers converge, Xi pointed out that protecting the ecological environment of the Yangtze River Basin is a prerequisite for promoting high-quality development and for protecting the cradle of Chinese civilization, Kuhn said.

At Yibin University, where he learned about the school's employment and entrepreneurship guidance services, Xi expressed concern about the employment of college graduates, expected to reach 10.76 million this year, a record high. He called for schools, enterprises and the government to expedite student employment, especially for families who have been lifted out of poverty, Kuhn said.

Kuhn said President Xi then inspected an optoelectronics company, where he advocated for independent innovation and also voiced support for the private economy. He stressed promoting science and technology by cultivating high-end, sophisticated enterprises.

Kuhn said Sichuan is one of China's most strategic provinces.

Sichuan has a population of almost 84 million, including over 5 million people of ethnic minorities and ranking fifth among all China's provincial-level districts, according to the seventh demographic census. In 2021, Sichuan's gross domestic product (GDP) exceeded 5.38 trillion yuan (around 802 billion U.S. dollars), ranking sixth among all the provincial-level districts. Sichuan has also set a good example for high-tech development and poverty alleviation in southwest China.
