The three Chinese astronauts who have been piloting the Shenzhou-14 spaceship have completed a slew of tasks including material transfer and arrangement, manned space environment building, cabin equipment installation and debugging after the trio have spent 19 days at the Tianhe core module of China's Tiangong space station.
Astronauts' training and preparation for next space missions and supporting work are also underway steadily.
On June 5, the Shenzhou-14 manned spacecraft was launched at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Astronauts Chen Dong, Liu Yang, and Cai Xuzhe became the third batch of astronauts to work in the Chinese space station, and are expected to work there for six months.
The trio will cooperate with the ground team to complete the assembly and construction of the Tiangong space station, developing it from a single-module structure into a national space laboratory with three modules -- the core module Tianhe and lab modules Wentian and Mengtian.
On April 29, 2021, the Tianhe core module was launched into its orbit, raising the curtain of the on-orbit construction of China's own space station.
On June 17 the same year, the Shenzhou-12 crew members Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming, and Tang Hongbo successively entered the Tianhe core module, marking the first time that the Chinese people entered their own space station.
Six days after the three astronauts entering the Tianhe core module, Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, talked with the in-space crew at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center, saying that he hopes the three astronauts will keep up the good work through close cooperation, so as to complete their mission.
On July 4, 2021, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo, equipped with the new generation of extravehicular spacesuits independently developed by China, successfully exited from the Tianhe core module's node module. This is the first extravehicular mission for astronauts in the Chinese space station.
With the concern and expectation of President Xi and the whole nation, the Shenzhou-12 crew successfully completed their three-month space mission and returned to Earth on September 16, 2021.
Currently, the Shenzhou-12 crew has turned to training for their next space mission.
"Over the past year, we have kept in mind the great trust the general secretary has placed on us. We always put the career first and carry our mission on our shoulders," said Nie Haisheng.
"As an astronaut of the new era, I'm ready to devote my lifetime to the space industry and contribute all myself to the space program," said Liu Boming.
"As a link between the preceding and the following batches of astronauts, the best thing I can do is to do my own job well and complete each mission that the country assigns to me," said Tang Hongbo.
On Oct. 16, 2021, the Shenzhou-13 manned spacecraft was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu entered the Tianhe core module successively, and Wang became the first female Chinese astronaut to enter the space station.
The Shenzhou-13 crew conducted their first extravehicular missions on Nov. 7, 2021, and their second on Dec. 26, 2021. All three astronauts came out of the core module during the flight mission, and Wang became the first Chinese female astronaut to conduct extravehicular activities.
So far, Chinese astronauts have successfully completed four extravehicular missions, two "Tiangong Class" space lectures and a large number of operations and experiments in space. The environmental control and life support system of Tianhe core module has maintained stable operation for over 400 days.
The excellent home-made extravehicular spacesuits, thousands of products designed for space missions and over 10 tons of cargo have safeguarded the astronauts when they worked and lived in the space.
"The Chinese dream has brought the space dream to us. We are so lucky to be born in such a good time. We must remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission in mind, strengthen our body, develop professional skills and work hard with energy, to engrave our absolute loyalty to the Party and the people in the vast space," said Jing Haipeng, Shenzhou-11 astronaut.
Following the launch of the Shenzhou-14, the lab module Wentian is scheduled to arrive in July, the lab module Mengtian in October, and then the Tianzhou-5 cargo craft and the Shenzhou-15 crewed spaceship later this year.
The crew members of the Shenzhou-15 will join the Shenzhou 14 astronauts aboard the Tiangong for the station's first-ever crew handover.
The on-orbit construction of China's space station is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
