Storyline

Stand-up paddleboarding is seeing a surge in popularity as the newest and hottest outdoor sport in Beijing.

As summer gets underway, people are finding spots and sports closer to home to enjoy for the season. And watersports offer a way to beat Beijing's soaring temperatures and stifling humidity.

In addition to a low technical threshold, relatively low prices and other factors, stand-up paddleboarding has seen throngs of newbies try it out to improve their physical and mental health.

"When the coach is commanding from shore, sometimes the students can't hear it, so he was able to get close to the student with the help of a board, and then he could guide them to obtain technical movements. So paddleboarding is slowly being developed," said Zhang Min, deputy minister of Water Sports Management Center of General Administration of Sport of China.

Paddleboarding is fairly easy to get started with, and most people as beginners can master its skills without special training.

"First time I saw a friend buy [a board]. I thought it looked fun, so I bought a board to use, and [I] can play with it for a long time," said a standup paddleboarding enthusiast.

"The charm of paddleboarding is to bring people a feeling of freedom. [I] can play and exercise freely on the water, and experience the happiness that nature brings to people," said Hong, another enthusiast.

One of China's top social media platforms, Xiaohongshu, shows that there were more than 20,000 posts on standup paddleboarding in the first half of this year. Other short-video platforms have also seen a rise in standup paddleboarding-related content.

Global market research company Technavio forecasts the standup paddleboarding market to grow annually from 2021 at six percent to 100 million U.S. dollars by 2025. The annual growth rate in China however, is expected to be 12 percent.

"About 50 to 80 people a day come to exercise, which is about three or four times as many as last year," said Wu Meng, staff member of a water club.

"Standup paddleboarding has become very popular in China, especially among young people. It's an easy way to get close to the water in summer. Another reason for its popularity is that it is easy to teach and easy to learn, and this attracts more people into the sport," said Yao Yu, partner, Join&Joy Cableski Waterski in Beijing.
