Guan Yanwei, a kindergarten teacher from Qingdao City in east China's Shandong Province, was awarded the "2022 Most Beautiful Teacher" in China ahead of the Teachers' Day on Friday.

Guan graduated from a normal school in 2002. After serving as a primary school teacher for six years, he was relocated to the Jimiya Central Kindergarten, the then smallest of its kind in the West Coast New Area of Qingdao.

As a rookie male kindergarten teacher, he worked hard to learn knowledge about early childhood education and drew on his personal experience as a father to treat the students like his own children.

"More than 100 children are sent here every year. The parents trust us, and we should repay the trust and take even more meticulous care of the growth of the children," Guan said.

Now, all the students in the kindergarten call him "principal dad". Guan said one of his tricks to become so close to the children is to greet them every day.

"At first, I thought I should greet every student every day. In this way, they would be familiar with me. And more importantly, it's the first step to build trust. Only after the children are familiar with you, would they trust you and be willing to share their small emotions with you," Guan said.

Guan also values safety education. He attended many early childhood safety education lectures and first aid skills training sessions, and then passed what he learnt onto other teachers.

He has also designed and organized various kinds of safety games and earthquake and fire drills in the kindergarten.

"He plays soccer with us, teaches us safety knowledge and takes us to outdoor activities," said a student.

Guan is also responsible for logistics in the kindergarten. His dedication to the job and kind personality have made him widely known as a man who responds to every plea for help among his colleagues.

"We would seek help from Guan when our computers, printers, water-taps or air conditioners went wrong, and even when we have some problems in communication with the students' parents. So, Guan is just the one who solves our problems, big or small, and who responds to every plea for help," said Zhang Na, Guan's another colleague.

For his outstanding performance, Guan was awarded the "Most Beautiful Teacher" in Qingdao and a model teacher in Shandong in 2021.

This year, he was listed among the "Most Beautiful Teachers" nationwide by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Ministry of Education.
