Storyline

China has made remarkable achievement in ensuring food security and promoting agricultural development over the past 10 years since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held in 2012.

The fifth Chinese farmers' harvest festival falls on Friday as the country is poised to embrace another bumper grain harvest in a challenging year for global food security.

China's total grain output reached 147.39 million tons in this year's summer harvest, up 1.434 million tons from last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The output of wheat, a staple crop, stood at 135.76 million tons, up one percent year on year.

The country's planting area and output per hectare of summer grains both saw expansions compared with 2021, the NBS said.

With some 9 percent of the world's arable land, China needs to feed nearly one-fifth of the global population. For President Xi Jinping, food security is among the country's most fundamental interests.

Over the past decade, food security has remained high on the agenda of Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Xi has on multiple occasions emphasized the importance of securing adequate food for the people.

He has called on the country to be well-prepared and remain vigilant concerning food security, and adhere to the principle of self-sufficiency based on domestic grain production, guaranteed production capacity, moderate food imports, and technological support.

China has incorporated the implementation of the food security strategy into its outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035.

The outline calls for efforts to ensure absolute security of grain and the supply of important sideline agricultural products, and to promote legislation concerning food security.

"Since the Party's 18th National Congress, General Secretary Xi has personally promoted and made deployment to strengthen institutional supply continuously. With this, main pillars of the national food security system have been formed, innovation and breakthroughs have also been made in some basic and key systems, providing strong support and guarantee for consolidating the foundation of food security," said Cheng Guoqiang, head of the institute of national food security strategy under the Renmin University of China.

Over the past decade, the productive capacity of cultivated land in China has been effectively improved, with the area of high-quality farmland expected to reach nearly 67 million hectares by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, scientific and technological agricultural innovation has been improved continuously, with the comprehensive mechanization rate of crop cultivation and harvest reaching 72 percent, and the self-sufficient rate of seeds topping 95 percent.

In the past ten years, China's annual grain output has grown from 600 million tons to 650 million tons.

This year, China's annual grain output is expected be more than 650 million tons for eight consecutive years.

"Implementing the instructions of General Secretary Xi, we have strengthened the integration of agriculture with science and technology, so as to enable farmers to grow top-quality grain with the best technologies," said Zhang Qiong, deputy head of station for popularizing agricultural techniques in Liuhe County of Jilin Province.

"With good state policies, high-quality farmland and seeds, as well as technical guidance in the whole planting process, I must well plant and manage the grain to increase the output," said Zhao Hongye, a large-scale grain producer.

As the most populous country in the world, China has managed to feed around one-fifth of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's arable land. This in itself is a major contribution to food security in the world.
