Storyline

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez's state visit to China will lead to new and greater development of bilateral relations in the new era and help build a community with a shared future between China and Latin America, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng Friday.

Xie's remarks came after Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, held talks Friday with Diaz-Canel, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and Cuban president.

Diaz-Canel is the first Latin American and Caribbean head of state visiting China since the 20th CPC National Congress was held last month, which fully demonstrates the special friendship between the two countries and parties, Xie said.

"The two heads of state have just held friendly, sincere and in-depth talks. President Xi Jinping and President Diaz-Canel also agreed that China and Cuba should enhance strategic cooperation, work together to build a community with a shared future, deepen practical cooperation, work together to promote socialist modernization, strengthen exchanges and mutual learning, and jointly open up a new horizon for the socialist cause," said Xie.

"It is worth mentioning that the China-Cuba community with a shared future is the first of its kind built by China and a Latin American and Caribbean country. I believe that this exchange between good comrades, the gathering between good friends, and the meeting between good brothers will certainly lead to a new and greater development of China-Cuba relations in the new era," he said.

Cuba is the first country in the Western Hemisphere that established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China in 1960, Xie noted.

"China-Cuba relations are an epitome of China's relations with Latin America and the Caribbean. The establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Cuba in 1960 marked the beginning of formal exchanges between New China and Latin American and Caribbean countries. In the new era, China-Latin America relations have embarked on a fast track and achieved leapfrog development. Over the past decade, China and Latin America have respected each other and treated each other as equals," Xie said.

Xie pointed out that President Xi's five trips to Latin American and Caribbean countries have charted the course for China-Latin America relations. The two sides support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns, he said.

"We are willing to take President Diaz-Canel's visit as a new starting point, continue to follow the principle of sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith, pursue the greater good and shared interests, work together with Latin American and Caribbean countries to further promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, actively implement the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, promote steady and sustained development of China-Latin America relations in the new era, and join hands to build a community with a shared future between China and Latin America," he said.

At the invitation of Xi, Diaz-Canel is paying a state visit to China from Nov 24 to 26.
