Storyline

Innovation and scientific engineering are the key behind China's success in building the T-shaped structure of the country's Tiangong space station in 19 months, said Ji Qiming, assistant to the director of China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) at a press conference on Monday.

Since the core module Tianhe was launched in April 2021, China officially kicked off the in-orbit construction of its space station, the final goal of the country's "three-step" human space program initiated 30 years ago.

In more than a year, the country has carried out 11 launches of spacecraft, with 12 astronauts, in four batches, conducting seven extravehicular activities to complete the assembly and construction of the T-shaped basic structure of the space station as scheduled.

Thousands of institutions and companies, as well as researchers and engineers have joined the constructive work, which has exhibited the great synergy of the Chinese people, said Ji.

"The development of the project has always adhered to self-reliance and independent innovation. We have made major breakthroughs and mastered a large number of key technologies with independent intellectual property rights. The localization rate of modules and core components is 100 percent, as we have blazed a path of manned aerospace development with Chinese characteristics," he said.

We have adhered to the guidance of system engineering theory by strengthening the top-level design and overall advancement, persisting on the organic unity of technological progress and resources, and prioritizing quality and safety, to ensure the efficient progress and continuous success in completing the space station construction tasks," Ji continued.
