Storyline

Chinese astronaut Fei Junlong, one of the three astronauts who will carry out the Shenzhou-15 spaceflight mission, said they are always prepared to go into space and contribute to the motherland's space exploration.

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced at a press conference on Monday that Fei, and the other two Chinese astronauts Deng Qingming and Zhang Lu will carry out the Shenzhou-15 spaceflight mission, and Fei will be the commander.

The Shenzhou-15 mission will wrap up the last stage of the space station construction and kick off the first stage of its application and development, said Fei.

"Seventeen years ago, I was in the Shenzhou-6 mission. Even now I'm still excited when I recall those vivid memories. Today I'm extremely proud and excited to go to the space again for my country," Fei said.

He noted that during their stay in orbit for about six months, they will carry out more in-orbit tests and equipment maintenance. In particular, they will complete more complicated extravehicular activities (EVAs).

Fei said that they have received many targeted ground training, and have full confidence in fulfilling their tasks successfully.

"Although we are the oldest crew compared with our peers in terms of age on average, we're confident in our capabilities, as we are still in the 'state of youth'," Fei said.

"Through hard ground training, we are growing more psychologically stable and can cooperate with each other in a more tacit way," he added.

The mission commander also shared an anecdote about the chemistry among the crew.

"We three have the same hobby, and all like writing calligraphy. We often practice and exchange experience during our spare time. So our capabilities have constantly improved during training, and so have our calligraphy skills," said Fei.

The Shenzhou-15 astronauts will rotate with the Shenzhou-14 trio in orbit and carry out verification of long-term residence in China's space station at its three-module configuration, according to the CMSA.

The Shenzhou-15 manned spaceship will be launched at 23:08 on Tuesday (Beijing Time) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, announced the CMSA.
