Storyline

Chinese astronaut Deng Qingming, a backup astronaut for 24 years, said he is ready for the upcoming Shenzhou-15 spaceflight mission at a meeting with the press at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Monday.

Deng, who will team up with colleagues Fei Junlong and Zhang Lu to carry out the mission, said that he stays committed to his original aspiration as an astronaut and has gone through unremitting training over the years to get himself always ready for the call of duty.

"As an astronaut, my normal shape is to stay committed to the original aspiration of spaceflight mission and never stop training, which is also my attitude. For me, I can spend my whole life getting prepared silently, but I will never allow me to be unprepared when the task comes by," said Deng.

"When I was chosen to be a crew member of the Shenzhou-15 spaceflight mission, I felt very calm. What I though more about is to cherish the opportunity, keep training solidly, and live up to the mission," he said.

Deng is the last one of the country's first group of 14 astronauts to be sent into space.

He was a backup crew member for both Shenzhou-10 and Shenzhou-11 missions. Of China's first batch of 14 trainees for the space program, six never made it onto the crew, including Deng.

But the veteran relentlessly pursued his space dream while serving as a backup for years, which has impressed many, and for which he was hailed as a "hidden hero".

"I will fly into the space tomorrow. We have a plenty of work to do, including the very important physical exercises, during our six-month stay in the space. At the spared time after work and training, I will appreciate the wonders of space. Before entering the venue, I made a promise to my family that I would be their eyes, and have a good look at the beautiful universe and the blue Earth for them," said Deng.

The Shenzhou-15 manned spaceship is scheduled to launch at 23:08 Tuesday (Beijing Time) at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.

It is the sixth flight mission of China's manned space program this year and the last one in the construction phase of China's space station.
