The first phase of the "sky train," China's first-ever suspended monorail train, started commercial operation in Wuhan of Hubei Province on Tuesday.
The first phase of the sky train project in Wuhan covers 10.5 km, with six stops.
The train has the function of automatic unmanned driving, and it operates at the speed of 60 kilometers per hour and each carriage could accommodate 110 passengers at maximum.
Compared with traditional railways or double-track subways, monorail trains offer a smoother ride and effectively eliminate interference from other traffic and pedestrians.
Transparent glass floor on the carriage is a highlight of the train, and passengers can see the city under their feet.
"It is exciting and novel. I can only look at the glass, but dare not stand on it," said a passenger.
"I feel the train runs steadily, with the air conditioner cooling comfortably and the surrounding landscape pleasant," said another passenger.
Formerly known as the suspension railway system, the tram's infrastructure includes a rail that is supported in the air by steel structure columns, and a wagon group suspended below the rail beam, which occupies less ground area and costs less.
It is one of Wuhan's attempt to explore the new patterns of the city's green, low-carbon urban rail transit.
