Storyline

Local authorities had well arranged quake-affected villagers in Zhongchuan Township of northwest China's Qinghai Province to safe and warm shelters on Tuesday, following the deadly earthquake that took place in neighboring Gansu Province in late Monday night.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred at 23:59 on Monday in Gansu with a focal depth of 10 km, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. The epicenter in Gansu is 15 kilometers away from a town of Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County which is administratively in charge of Zhongchuan Township.

At one of the shelter points in Zhongchuan, nine tents have been set up, each capable of accommodating seven people. Looking inside, villagers were able to warm themselves up around a stove, as the local lowest temperature at nights now is lower than 10 degrees Celsius below zero.

"There's a warm stove here. And we have three full meals a day. I was scared last night, but I feel much better after moving into this shelter," said Qi Jingshu, a villager of Zhongchuan's Caotan Village

After the earthquake, a local primary school, one of the shelter points in Zhongchuan, has received over 130 displaced villagers. In addition to the tents, the township government also allocated spare classrooms in the teaching building to resettle the affected people.

"We have been providing psychological counselling and medical assistance after the quake occurred the day before yesterday. At present, the residents have become relatively calmer. And with the help of the power company that provided us a special line connected to the main power supply line, we're able to have lighting and heating systems that can support the use of electric heated blankets," said Zhao Xueliang, deputy head of Zhongchuan Township.

Following the earthquake, a medical support team consisting of 20 members from the Armed Police Corps Hospital of Qinghai arrived at the shelter point in Caotan Village, to provide medical consultations to the affected people.

"We have medical specialists from the departments of internal medicine, orthopedics, surgery, and traditional Chinese medicine therapy. We thought local people may have been psychologically affected by the earthquake, so, there are also experts in the field of psychology in our team. We've brought portable color ultrasound and electrocardiogram machines to address practical issues for the affected villagers as early as possible. We have brought over 100 types of medication. And since the start of our work here, we have already provided more than 200 medical consultations to local residents," said Zhou Yonggui, director of the Armed Police Corps Hospital of Qinghai.

At present, search and rescue operations are still underway in Minhe County. A total of more than 500 firefighters have been dispatched there, trying every way possible to find survivors.

According to Qinghai's Provincial Emergency Management Department, as of 05:30 Wednesday, the earthquake had killed 18 people in Haidong City, with 198 people injured and 16 still missing.
