As the Spring Festival approaches, the major ports connecting south China's Zhuhai City with Macao has seen a peak passenger flow, which mainly consists of Macao residents who return home for the festival and mainland residents who go to Macao for purchasing.
Statistics from the Zhuhai Border Entry-Exit Inspection Station show that since the beginning of China's Spring Festival travel rush on Jan 26, the station has inspected more than 4 million inbound and outbound passengers, and more than 200,000 inbound and outbound vehicles, an increase of more than 13 percent compared with normal time.
On January 31 alone, the Gongbei Border Inspection Station inspected more than 9,000 inbound and outbound vehicles, reaching the highest number of vehicles in a single day in the past four years.
"We are from Macao and our hometown is in Zhongshan City. In order to avoid congestion, we decided to go home a week in advance to celebrate the Chinese New Year during this period," said a Macao resident surnamed Zheng.
Other major Zhuhai-Macao ports, including Hengqin Port and Qingmao Port, also experienced a significant surge in the flow of inbound and outbound passengers. In response, the border inspection departments in Zhuhai enhanced collaboration with relevant authorities in Hong Kong and Macao to ensure effective customs clearance.
