"I think people are looking at lifestyle sports and activities that they can sustain for many years to come and that again ties in really nice with where we focus because again if you're looking after your health you always perform better and I think that's definitely a trend is just protecting your health and doing things that you can enjoy."

They expect their equipment to be in working condition. They expect my change rooms to be properly clean when they walk in there. So, that we try and just make sure that we set the standard at the base level. And from there, really what we're trying to do is then surprise and delight through our equipment and the services we offer, how can we create those magic moments that people just want to come back."

Storyline

More people are starting to take their health seriously in South Africa after the COVID-19 pandemic, with many taking greater care of the foods they consume as well as the exercise regimes they follow.

As the mindset shift towards a healthy lifestyle takes shape, the industry is reaping huge rewards.

The health and fitness industry in South Africa is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars with annual revenues rising to over 12 million U.S. dollars. From vitamins and supplements, to health clubs and fitness trends, the industry is booming and showing no signs of slowing down.

"I think people are looking at lifestyle sports and activities that they can sustain for many years to come and that again ties in really nice with where we focus because again if you're looking after your health you always perform better and I think that's definitely a trend is just protecting your health and doing things that you can enjoy," said Brandon Fairweather, brand manager of Biogen, a premium wellness brand in South Africa.

Planet Fitness is one of the leading health clubs in South Africa, boasting 50 gyms and providing memberships from less than 20 U.S. dollars a month. With more South Africans focusing on being healthier, the appetite for fitness facilities like this appears insatiable, drawing more and more people in to sweat, lose weight and get stronger.

"Customer service for us when you come into the club for me is an expectation, so what do my members expect? They expect a friendly person behind reception. They expect their equipment to be in working condition. They expect my change rooms to be properly clean when they walk in there. So, that we try and just make sure that we set the standard at the base level. And from there, really what we're trying to do is then surprise and delight through our equipment and the services we offer, how can we create those magic moments that people just want to come back," said Mannee De Wet, managing director of Planet Fitness.

Health clubs are also listening to their members as they seek to gain an advantage over their competition with selfie booths, a glute-specific or “booty workout” area and more awareness around mental health.

"On the other side of the spectrum is people now, after COVID, also looking at things more from a mind body point of view. I think mental wellbeing is now starting to come on the forefront and how do we as a health club for me being physically fit is very important for us, but being mentally strong and healthy as much," said De Wet.

Despite the availability of health clubs like Planet Fitness and Virgin Active, many people are turning to a cheaper form of fitness.

"Road running is a very strong discipline in the South African sports fraternity. It's been coming along many, many years. Throughout the years, COVID obviously gave it a bit of a halt, but currently the road running scene is stronger than ever. We can see it in the number of people participating in road running events, trial running, and the various clubs are just growing and it's fantastic,” said Francois Jordaan, race director of the MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon, a road running event held in South Africa.

The health and fitness business has seen fads come and go, but one thing that has remained constant is South Africans opting for healthier lifestyles, either through eating better or moving more.
