"The EU has hyped up the so-called 'China's overcapacity' and 'unfair competition,' discriminatorily deploying various trade tools to launch a series of investigations against Chinese companies and products, and distorting the definition of subsidies and abusing rules and procedures during these investigations. This has significantly raised the risk of economic and trade friction between China and the EU, seriously undermining enterprises' confidence in cooperation with the EU."

"China always believes that China and the EU are each other's important economic and trade partners with a sound foundation for cooperation. Expanding cooperation and achieving win-win outcome amid healthy competition is a right way to get along with each other. The fact that some Chinese auto companies choose to set up factories in Europe is a vivid illustration of the complementary advantages and mutual benefit between China and Europe, which is conducive to stimulating the local economy and employment and promoting the development of the new energy vehicle industry in Europe."

Storyline

China expects the European Union (EU) to abandon protectionism and return to the right path of dialogue and cooperation to address economic and trade friction, a spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

He Yadong, the spokesman, made the statement at a press conference in Beijing in response to the EU's recent trade protectionist measures, including discriminatory investigations against Chinese electric vehicles, wind power, and photovoltaic and other related products and enterprises.

"The EU has hyped up the so-called 'China's overcapacity' and 'unfair competition,' discriminatorily deploying various trade tools to launch a series of investigations against Chinese companies and products, and distorting the definition of subsidies and abusing rules and procedures during these investigations. This has significantly raised the risk of economic and trade friction between China and the EU, seriously undermining enterprises' confidence in cooperation with the EU," He said.

"China always believes that China and the EU are each other's important economic and trade partners with a sound foundation for cooperation. Expanding cooperation and achieving win-win outcome amid healthy competition is a right way to get along with each other. The fact that some Chinese auto companies choose to set up factories in Europe is a vivid illustration of the complementary advantages and mutual benefit between China and Europe, which is conducive to stimulating the local economy and employment and promoting the development of the new energy vehicle industry in Europe," said the spokesman.

"We hope that the EU side will work with China to earnestly implement the important consensus reached at the recent trilateral summit between the leaders of China, France and the EU, properly handle economic and trade frictions through dialogue and consultation, and accommodate each other's legitimate concerns. China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate interests of Chinese enterprises," the spokesman stressed.

In response to reports that the European Commission -- the executive arm of the EU -- said it has received a letter from China calling for the resumption of trade relations, the spokesman said China has repeatedly expressed its concern and strong dissatisfaction about the EU's trade protectionist measures, reiterating China's call for the EU to abandon protectionism and return to the path of dialogue and cooperation.
