A drone strike severely damaged an official vehicle of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) en route to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) on Tuesday, no injuries were reported, according to an IAEA statement.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon, approximately 8 km from the frontline in Ukrainian-controlled territory.
The vehicle, part of a convoy on a rotation mission, was heading to the handover point near the frontline to meet the IAEA team stationed at the ZNPP for the past month, said the statement on Tuesday.
Earlier that day, the incoming IAEA team had successfully reached the handover point to facilitate the rotation of staff at the ZNPP.
The statement detailed that the driver of a second vehicle in the convoy witnessed the kamikaze drone approaching from behind before it struck the targeted vehicle. The two IAEA personnel inside, a driver and a security officer, escaped unharmed, but the rear of the vehicle was completely destroyed.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi strongly condemned the attack, describing it as "unacceptable" and reiterating his call for maximum restraint.
Russia on Wednesday said Ukraine launched drone attacks on the IAEA vehicle, while Ukraine earlier pinned the blame on Russian forces.
