Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded his three-day trip to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Friday after attending a series of activities marking the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited Macao from Wednesday to Friday to attend the anniversary celebrations, administer the inauguration of the sixth-term government of the SAR, and carry out an inspection tour of the region.
After arriving Macao on Wednesday afternoon, Xi gave a brief speech at the airport in which he said every visit to this beautiful place has been very delightful for him.
He extended sincere greetings and best wishes to all Macao residents on behalf of the central government and Chinese people of all ethnic groups.
"Macao is 'a pearl on the palm' of the motherland. Macao's development and the well-being of Macao residents have always been on my mind,” Xi said.
Following his arrival, Xi met with Ho Iat Seng, Macao's outgoing chief executive, and expressed the central authorities' full acknowledgment of the work of Ho and the fifth-term Macao SAR government.
On Thursday morning, President Xi visited the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), accompanied by Ho, where he talked with teachers, students and scientific researchers.
Established after Macao's return to the motherland in 1999, MUST has become a comprehensive university with the largest enrollment in Macao.
Xi called on the research fellows and students to aim high and strive for greater achievements, contributing to the betterment of Macao, the country, and humanity.
On the same day, Xi inspected the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
Xi praised the cooperation zone for its role in bolstering Macao's economic diversification, and urged further efforts to improve connectivity and facilitate market integration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Also on Thursday, Xi met with officials of the executive, legislative and judicial organs of the Macao SAR, saying that they have comprehensively, accurately and unwaveringly implemented the "one country, two systems" policy.
He also met with representatives of the Macao SAR's disciplined services.
Xi later met with representatives from all walks of life in Macao, encouraging them to continue to stay united and work for greater achievements.
The Chinese president also met with heads of central government agencies and major mainland-funded companies in Macao.
Xi met with Ho Hau Wah and Chui Sai On, two former chief executives of the Macao SAR , and John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
On Thursday evening, Xi attended a welcome dinner held by the Macao SAR government on the eve of the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland, on which he commended the SAR for its achievements over the past five "extraordinary" years.
Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan also attended a grand gala at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, which was held as part of the anniversary celebrations.
On Friday morning, Xi attended a gathering celebrating the anniversary and administered the inauguration ceremony of the sixth-term government of the Macao SAR.
Sam Hou Fai was sworn in on Friday morning as the sixth-term chief executive of the Macao SAR, administered by Xi.
Principal officials of the sixth-term government of the SAR were also sworn in at the ceremony.
Xi later held a meeting with Sam, saying that he is confident that Macao's new chief executive will lead the SAR's new government and people from all walks of life in comprehensively, accurately and unwaveringly implementing the principle of "one country, two systems" under which the people of Macao administer Macao with a high degree of autonomy.
Xi also met with new officials of the executive, legislative and judicial organs of the Macao SAR.
Xi on Friday also inspected the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) garrison stationed in Macao, urging the military personnel to enhance defense capabilities in all aspects and contribute more to breaking new ground in the practice of "one country, two systems" with Macao characteristics.
After concluding these activities, Xi was then given a seeing-off ceremony at the airport, where he and his wife shook hands with those who had come to see them off at the airport and waved goodbye to a cheering crowd.
