"Few in the Taiwan region know about the atrocities committed by the Unit 731. I unwaveringly believe the historians from Taiwan and the mainland should work together to reveal all the historical facts to the public. Learning history is to learn lessons and not to make the same mistakes. The people on both sides of the Strait, especially the next generation, need to have such opportunities to understand the truth of history. They should have access to adequate history education. This is the due responsibility of our generation."

Storyline

Youths from both sides of the Taiwan Strait should know about the atrocities committed by the Japanese Unit 731, said Ma Ying-jeou, former chairman of Chinese Kuomintang, as he visited an exhibition hall along with a delegation of Taiwan young people in northeast China's Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, on Friday.

Ma made the remarks during a visit to the Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Crime Committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army, which was a part of his nine-day visit to the mainland. Scheduled from Dec 18 to 26, the tour is aimed at strengthening exchanges between youth from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The exhibition hall displays the evidences of the germ-warfare activities and the brutal human experiments conducted by the Unit 731 during World War II.

The military unit was a top-secret biological and chemical warfare research base established in Harbin as the nerve center for Japanese biological warfare in China and Southeast Asia. At least 3,000 people were used for human experiments by Unit 731, and more than 300,000 people in China were killed by Japan's biological weapons.

This is the due responsibility of our generation," said Ma.

The Ma Ying-jeou Foundation said previously that China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression started from northeast China and Friday's visit intends to show to the youth from Taiwan the historical evidence of the sacrifice that Chinese people had made.

"I felt shocked, depressed and sad when I entered that exhibition hall, because the displayed materials and the data represent the people who should have lived to the end of their lives. Watching them my heart broke and I was shocked, sad and wrathful," said Chu Chih-chun, a student from Taiwan.

"When I walked into the exhibition hall, watching the evidence of the war atrocities, I firstly felt heavy-hearted, sad, and even angry. But when I finished the visit, I found I was thinking about the atrocities from a more general perspective that concerns all the human beings. I was thinking about the development of human civilizations, and I was thinking how to remember such a period of history," said Dai Zhi-Ying another student from Taiwan.
