Storyline

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday at his annual press conference in Moscow that Russian forces are gradually achieving main objectives set for special military operation in Ukraine and he is ready to hold talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Putin held his annual press conference with a "Direct Line" question and answer session in Moscow on Thursday. Russians from across the country submitted their questions ahead of the event, which the president addressed along with questions raised by journalists.

When discussing the Ukraine crisis, Putin said that the situation of the special military operation is undergoing significant changes. The Russian forces are advancing several square kilometers daily along the entire front line and are gradually achieving the main objectives set for the operation.

The battle for Kursk is ongoing, and although it is unclear when the fighting will ultimately end, Putin asserted that the Russian military will undoubtedly repel the Ukrainian forces.

Putin said that Russia is ready to negotiate with Ukraine without any preconditions, but reiterated that negotiations must be based on the current situation and previous agreements. In response, Ukraine declared that it is only prepared to end the conflict with Russia on its own terms.

Regarding U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Putin said that he has not spoken with Trump for over four years but is ready to engage in dialogue or hold a meeting at any time. Putin also mentioned that Russia is effectively at war with nearly all of NATO and that the combat readiness of the Russian military is at the highest level in the world. He further noted that the military spending of NATO countries is clearly unsustainable.
