Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China is becoming a vibrant hub of colorful winter sports, enchanting locals and visitors with its silver-blanketed wonderland and ice-snow amusement.
The Jiangjun Mountain International Ski Resort in Altay City, a rare urban alpine ski destination in China, has become a popular spot for snow sport enthusiasts.
Since mid-November, the resort has already attracted over 160,000 visitors, with daily visitors surpassing 7,000, up 10 percent compared to the same period last year.
"The snow in Altay is amazing. The ski slopes are well-developed, offering a rich variety of experiences. It is a place with expansive snow coverage and good snow quality," said snowboarding enthusiast Xiao Wenqin.
In addition to traditional sports like skiing and snowboarding, the resort also offers paragliding, hot air balloon rides, and snowmobiling, providing visitors with unique and exciting experiences.
Each winter, local herders in Xinjiang organize thrilling folk activities on the snow, including horse racing, sheep-scrambling competition, and the "girl's chase" game.
A sheep scrambling event in the snow in Urumqi City showcased impressive riding skills and fierce competition. This traditional horseback game, popular in the region, features two teams competing to capture a sheep, testing the riders' horsemanship, strength, and teamwork.
In Baiyanghe Township, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, the local Kazakh ethnic group, dressed in traditional costumes, participated in the thrilling "girl's chase" game on the vast snow-covered field. Originally, this traditional horseback game involved young women chasing men who had playfully attempted to flirt with them. Today, it has evolved into an entertaining event for a wider range of participants and audiences.
